The original vehicle employed smooth horizontal volute spring suspension and light armor because it was designed as a long-range weapon rather than a front-line assault machine. Historical context adds further depth: more than 400 M40s were produced before the end of WWII, and the type later served in the Korean War before replacement by the M53.
