The heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis entered service at the Philadelphia
Navy Yard in November 1932. On the day the war began in the Pacific (7th
December 1941), the Indianapolis took part in an exercise as the
flagship of the Scouting Force US Fleet. In March 1943, she became the
flagship of Task Force 58, which consisted of 130,000 naval and army
troops and was under the command of Admiral Raymond Ames Spruance,
Commander Fifth Fleet. The Indianapolis led the giant fleet and was
involved in most of the major battles in the Central Pacific. In March
1945, the ship was badly damaged and returned to the dock at Mare Island
for repairs. During the two-month repair, all equipment was brought up
to date. Later on the Indianapolis picked up classified cargo and
personnel in San Francisco and on 16th July made its way to Tinian
Island, where a B29 bomber base was located. Four days after her arrival
at Tinian Island the Indianapolis was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-58 and sank after two hits.
