After the announcement of its concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1973, the Mitsubishi Pajero was one of the most recognizable Mitsubishi 4WD cars, sold from 1982 to 2021 through a fourth model change. At the 1983 Paris-Dakar Rally, this car took a championship in an unmodified production vehicle division, and after that, showed off its great performance around the world. RC model making – what are RC models?
RC models (remote-controlled models) are designed based on original vehicles and controlled by a remote control. They are typically available in scales ranging from 1:8 to 1:36, although a small number of models are significantly larger or smaller. Unlike preassembled vehicles, our models are shipped as kits with assembly instructions – perfect for model making enthusiasts!
RC kits – model making kits for DIY assembly
RC model kits are shipped as individual parts, which must be assembled by the user in accordance with the supplied instructions – a fun experience in itself. What’s more, building an RC vehicle is also a great way to learn about the various components, such as the principles behind a differential and all-wheel drive, or the difference between a suspension strut and an oil-pressure shock absorber.
How do RC models work?
In simple terms, RC models are controlled via a transmitter in the remote control and a built-in receiver in the model. On a technical level, this involves the following processes:
- The position of the control components on the remote control is converted into a PWM (pulse-width modulation) signal.
- This signal is transmitted to the built-in receiver in the vehicle over a high frequency (2.4 GHz).
- The receiver receives and filters the control signals.
- The control signals are sent to the speed controller and steering servo, where they are converted into mechanical movements.
The signals for the steering servo result in a steering movement, while the speed controller signals determine the direction and speed of the motor. For precise control, it’s best to choose a remote control with proportional steering.
What must I pay attention to when selecting an RC model?
There are two key factors to consider before purchasing an RC model kit:
Intended application
First of all, you should consider where you will use the remote-controlled vehicle. Different RC models are designed for different types of terrain – for example, classic racing vehicles are best used on level surfaces, whereas taller off-road vehicles with large tyres can also be used off-road.
Accessories and package contents
Before purchasing a remote-controlled vehicle, it’s always advisable to check the package contents so that you know what’s included and whether you need to purchase any additional accessories. For example, most Tamiya RC models do not include batteries and are shipped without a receiver, servo and remote control. What is an RTR model?
The abbreviation “RTR” (sometimes written as RtR”) refers to models that are “ready to run”, or ready to use out of the box. In other words, they don’t need to be assembled, and can be used immediately after inserting the batteries or charging the built-in battery.
