Article number: 300035065 Product: 1/35 WWII Dt. SdKfz.171 Panther A (2) In the beginning of 1942, in order to fight against the T-34, the German military ordered a new tank from Dymler-Benz and M.A.N. companies with the following specifications: Weight- 35 tons; speed- 60 km/h; armament 75mm long gun and armour, 60mm thick in front hull, 35mm thick in the rear and 100 mm at the front of the gun turret. Lastly, it was specified that the tank be equipped with a Maiback HL210, water-cooled, V-type 12 cylinder engine. In May of the same year, M.A.N.'s model was chosen without waiting for completion of a prototype tank. However, there were 2 important modifications. First, in order to meet the military's demand, considerably more than the original 35 ton weight was needed. Second, the military ordered a change in the thickness of the frontal armour from 60mm to 80mm. Because of these changes, the engine type had to be chanded from HL210 to HL230. Then, in order to accommodate this engine, a much better gear was needed, but mass production began without this last change, which resulted in frequent gear malfunctions and related trouble. This became the Panther's greatest defect. In the same year, Dymler-Benz and Henschel were ordered to produce the Panther. Therefore, production was greatly increased and a total of 6283 Panther Tanks were produced, second only to P2KW-4 in number. The first mass produced Panther type D was not equipped with a machine gun but after the experience of close battle. A 7.92mm MG 34 was added to the Panther's right front hull armament beginning with its type A. The special feature of the Panther was the left and right driving mechanism. This created an interchangeability of movements, using the torsion bar system. By 1944, the Panther was further improved from Type A to Type G with a change in its side shape. The Panther continued its activities against the Allied Forces throughout the latter half of the war. One of the famed battles it waged during this latter period probably is the one against the new Soviet JS II heavy tank on the eastern front. The Panther at that time, was the main strength tank of the Gross Deutschland, the strongest German Mechanized Division, under the command of General Hasso Von Manteuffel. The Panther reportedly destroyed 350 JS II tanks and 20 other armoured vehicles in the battle. It was a complete one-sided victory for the Panther and one for the book of military history. The Panther, therefore, was an extremely balanced tactical tank and should be called a masterpiece destined to bear the last glory of German war technology. It's glorious name will forever remain in the records of the 2nd World War. Since 1943, during World War II, thee appeared an unusually fast tank on the European Front that silhoueted among its German Mechanized Division. This was the "Panther" medium tank, with its formidable power of attack and fast maneuverability, that soon became an object of terror to men of the Allied Forces. If put to a question, "Which was the best German tank during the war?" The majority of the people, without hesitation will answer the name "Panther". It is known that the PZKW-IV and the Tiger-II tanks were also produced by German technology and were both outstanding tanks. But the PZKW-IV was meant to be replaced by the Panther, and the Panther, showing improved attacking and defensive powers and accurate maneuver ability on the field, soon became the German's main strength tank. The Tiger I with its 88mm gun would seem at first to be superior to the Panther's 75mm gun in attacking power. But when viewed from the point of armour piercing power of the shell, the Panther, with its 70 caliber KWK 42 anti tank gun and sloping side armour provided much stronger in actual fighting than the Tiger I's 56 caliber KWK 36 anti tank gun with vertival side armour. The Tiger II tank, which should be called the 'improved Panther' was much stronger in attacking and defensive power than the Panther. However, considering the number of Panthers produced and used during this time, the Panther tank was still number 1. The main strength German tanks at the start of the war were all unique in the sense that their designs were completely based on German plans and ideas. But the Panther was influenced by the Soviet masterpiece tank T-34 which was seen for the first time on the east European Front. Ger. Panther Med. Tank   Warning! The most famous one was and is the BB-63 Missouri. 212,000 horsepower enabled the heavily armed colossus to reach a top speed of 33 knots. The main armament consisted of nine 16 inch (40.6 cm) guns distributed in three triple turrets (2 fore and 1 aft) with a maximum range of up to 40 km. The ships of the Iowa class were 270.4 m long and had a relatively narrow hull of a maximum of 33 m, so they could easily pass the Panama Canal. The USS Missouri entered service in 1944 and participated in numerous operations in the Pacific War. On September 2, 1945, the Treaty of Unconditional Surrender of the Japanese Armed Forces was signed aboard the USS Missouri. With the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950, the USS Missouri and her sister ships were used for fire support and relegated to reserve service in 1955. In 1986 the ship was completely renovated, modernized and equipped with the latest weapon technology. The Missouri was used one last time in the Gulf War and in 1993, after almost 50 years in service, she took her well-deserved retirement. Included: construction kit, instructions manual, decor

Heavy Cruiser Mogami The First Fleet Replenish Program of 1931 gave Japan a special allowance to build 50,955 tons worth of new light cruisers armed with 6-in guns. Construction of the new fleet began at Kure Naval Arsenal with the Mogami. The original Mogami was equipped with 5 triple 15.5cm gun turrets, 4 triple 61cm torpedo launchers, 4 twin 12.7cm gun mounts, protection against 8-in. shells, 4 twin 25mm guns, and 2 twin 13mm machine guns. The cruiser held all of this equipment within the 8,500-ton displacement limit. When naval treaties were removed, the ship was outfitted with 20.3cm gun turret, which caused the ships to be top-heavy and unstable. The Mogami underwent numerous reinforcement modifications such as hull strengthening, resizing of the bridge, and repairing cracks and hull plate. The Mogami was involved in the WWII invasion of Java at Bantam Bay, the Indian Ocean raids in the Bay of Bengals, Midway Invasion, and was defeated by a torpedo from Akebono off the coast of the Panaon Islands.

300032519

€28.49

Article number: 300032519 Product: 1:48 US M10 Mid Production Between 1941 and 1942 the M3 self-propelled gun was the backbone of the US anti-tank division. Consisting of the M3 half-track with mounted 36 caliber 75 mm anti-tank gun, it proved ineffective in fighting German armour, calling for a more manoeuvrable tank destroyer with increased firepower. In November 1941 a prototype T35 tank destroyer was manufactured. Officially adopted in June 1942 under the designation M10, it was the US Army's first full-track tank destroyer. The M10 had the lower chassis from the M4A2 Sherman, but was fitted with a lower, redesigned upper section. Designed for maximum manoeuvrability, the M10's armour was relatively thin. To compensate for this weakness, an angled chassis was chosen to increase bullet deflection. A 50 caliber M7 3-inch (76.2 mm) cannon was mounted in the rotating, open-topped turret. Firing M62 capped armour-piercing shells (APC), the M7 3 gun could penetrate 88 mm armour at a range of 1000 m with an impact angle of up to 30 degrees. The M10 featured a GMC 6064 (or 6064D) 2-stroke water-cooled diesel engine that produced 375hp for a top speed of 48 km/h. The M10 was fitted with a counterweight at the rear of the turret, with early designs carrying box weights and later triangular weights. Serial production ran from September 1942 to December 1943 for a total of 6706 vehicles, including those with M10A1 petrol engines. Model kit, Scale 1:48, Vehicle, Manual, Decal, Length 143 mm.

Article number: 300061028 Product: 1:48 Fairchild Republic A-10A Thunder.II About the Fairchild Republic A-10A "Thunderbolt II" The need for close air support, on small pin point targets, was recognized early during the Vietnam conflict. Following an experimental development program begun in the early 1970's, the Fairchild Republic Industries A-10 Thunderbolt II was selected for production. The performance characteristics demanded were for operation on unimproved short fields, both high and low airspeed maneuverability, easy maintenance, long loiter times and range, excellent pilot protection, and a capacity for large mixed weapons loads. The appearance of the A-10 is remarkable while its performance is amazing. Known affectionately as the "Wart Hog" by its pilots, it's a large single seat aircraft, identified by a pair of TF-34-100A high bypass fan jet engines mounted high near the rear of the twin tailed fuselage. A few of the specifications are: Length 53' 4"; height 14'8", span 57'6"; maximum gross weight 47,400lbs, including 16,000lbs of external stores. Internal armament is the GAU-8/A 30mm Gatling cannon capable of 2100 or 4200 rounds per minute. It carries 1350 rounds of ammunition, a fire control head-up display, CRT TV monitor, laser spot seeker plus a diversified armament panel that can facilitate any operational need. The A-10 has been around since 1972, and has again proven its worth during the recent Gulf war.   Warning! Not suitable for children under 14 years.

The Bf 109 is a legendary name in aviation, an aircraft which combined longevity and versatility in the hands of the Luftwaffe and other air forces. The G-6 was the most prolifically produced Bf 109, accounting for more than a third of the total. Introduced in early 1943, it could be fitted with underwing 20mm cannons in pods, or synchronized 13mm machine guns in distinctive bulges ahead of the cockpit, and was powered by the Daimler-Benz DB605A liquid-cooled V12, which gave a top airspeed of 640km/h.

Article number: 300061041 Product: 1:48 Ger. Focke Wulf Fw190 D-9 Following the successful entry of the Focke-Wulf Fw190A series of fighter aircraft over the English channel during the autumn of 1941, the German RLM requested high altitude version to complement the fighter fleet, and three projects were started. The Fw 190B used the B.M.W. 801 turbosupercharged radial engine and a pressurized cockpit, but very few of these were built. The Fw190C was powered by a 1,750hp Daimler Benz DB603A in-line engine, of which three prototypes were built. The third high altitude project was based on the Focke Wulf Fw190A airframe and powered by a Junkers engine. The fuselage was lengthened to accommodate the V-12 cylinder, liquid cooled, 1,750hp Jumo 213 engine, and made its initial flight during the winter of 1941 - 42. Five further prototypes were produced, plus small batch of Fw 190 D-Os were completed from standard production Fw 190A-7 airframes. These pre-production aircraft were followed by the Fw190 D-2 through D-8 designations. The Fw 190D-9 began production in June 1944, with early versions having the flat topped canopy, and from W. Nr. 210002 onwards having the Galland hood (blown canopy). It went into combat with the III/JG 54 "Grunherz" (Green Hearts) in September 1944, at Achmer, Germany, as top cover for the new Messerschmitt Me262 Jet fighters then entering service.

The Panzer IV was one of the most feared weapons in WWII, and would serve German forces throughout the conflict in the guise of a number of variants. The Ausf.H variant itself featured early, middle and late production types, all of which were armed with a L/48 75mm gun and featured "Schürzen" armor side skirts for greater protection. Late production Panzer IVs were identifiable by their tracks: they lacked a center guide. Upper road wheels had their rubber tires removed and were made into steel wheels, while the tank received cast metal idler wheels. 3,774 Ausf.H Panzer IVs were produced between April 1943 and July 1944, and it was eventually succeeded by the Ausf.J. The Sturmtiger was a seldom-seen variant of the Tiger I, using existing chassis and suspension to mount a mammoth 38cm caliber mortar for use against buildings and other fortifications in urban warfare. Only an estimated 18 were ever produced, between August and December 1944, and they were somewhat unwieldy in that they weighed around 65 tons. Article number: 300061025 Product: 1:48 Mitsu. A6M3 Zero Fighter T32 Hamp About the A6M3 Type 32 Zero Fighter (HAMP) Much has been written over the years about the Japanese Zero Fighter Aircraft series. Much was based upon hearsay and legend and little upon fact itself. Even the Allied Forces and governments refused at first to acknowledge its existence, and when they did get a copy of it, they could hardly believe the performance it produced. The prototype zero or A6M1 first took place on paper on January 17, 1938, following the Japanese request for a shipboard fighter with a top speed of 27o kph at 12000 ft 7 6-8 hours of cruise economy endurance and 1.5-2 hours at normal combat speeds. Armament was to be two 20mm cannon and two 7.7mm machine guns plus the normal radio equipment and direction finding gear. These specifications wee so far from the existing state of the art that the famous Nakajima Company dropped out of competition, stating that they were impossible to meet. That left Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and their design team headed by Jiro Horikoshi the only company to tackle the problem. First flight was on 1 April 1939 and combat trials were concluded in July 1940 with 15 pre-production A6M2's sent to two squadrons by the end of the month. These aircraft had folding wing tips to accommodate aircraft carrier elevators, and were the ones first seen by Gen. Chennault in China, and at Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Although the A6M2 met or exceeded original design specifications, modifications were taking place at the Mitsubishi factory to improve roll rate, speed up handling aboard carriers, and utilize the uprated Sakae 21, 1,130 hp engine. The first A6M3 type 32 (code named HAMP) took to the air on 15 July 1941 with production beginning in April 42. A total of 343 aircraft were produced by August 43, when the type 52 A6M5 began production. The Type 32 Zero had the most radical change in the entire series and was readily recognized by its squared off wing tips. This reduced total span to exactly 11 meters and eliminated the cumbersome folding tips which consumed time during combat to get the aircraft down carrier elevators. The larger Sakae 21 engine gave the type 32 a better rate of climb and the shorter wing span (1 meter shorter) lessened stick forces and increased roll rate. The Hamp was utilized throughout the war, but saw most of its service off of land based installations in the southern island chains of New Guinea and the Phillipines.   Warning! Not suitable for children under 14 years.

Article number: 300032589 Product: 1:48 Tank destroyer Elefant This is a 1/48 scale assembly model of the German Heavy Tank Destroyer Elephant. The newly tooled 1/48 Elefant has extensive detail, even at this smaller scale, thanks to the extensive research conducted by Tamiya's designers to make the 1/35 scale rendition. The development of the full-size Elefant is an interesting case study in weapons development. Its chassis was developed by Porsche in the design competition for the Tiger I, but while Porsche was sure enough of its success to ready 100 examples of the chassis before the end of the competition, the design was not chosen. The "left over" chassis were turned into the Elefant on the orders of Hitler in 1942 - some 90 examples were built by May 1943. With armor plates, up to 200mm thick and a powerful long-caliber 8.8cm gun, it was a formidable piece of equipment, and served German troops until the end of WWII.

Article number: 300061126 Product: 1:48 US Grum. FM-1 Wildcat/Martlet Mk.V Here comes more aircraft news! Tamiya welcomes the 1/48 Grumman FM-1 Wildcat/Martlet Mk.V™ in our legendary 1/48 Aircraft Series. Based upon our popular Item 61034 1/48 Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat, this kit authentically recreates the FM-1 featuring four machine guns with both the U.S. Navy and Royal Navy markings and one sitting pilot figure. The deployment of the Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat – one of the main U.S. Navy carrier-based fighter – started from 1940, and in 1942, the F4F-4 was introduced and this aircraft employed a foldable wing for efficient use on deck while 12.7mm machine guns were increased from four to six. With its bulletproofing, rigid fuselage and its pilots' tactics, the F4F-F was more than equal to the Zero fighter. Although the F4F-F gave its position to aircraft equipped with 2,000hp-class engine such as the F6F Hellcat and F4U Corsair after WWII onward, , this aircraft - which was suitable for use on small flight decks – constructed its presence as the aircraft to be deployed on escort carrier and to enhance air force. While the Grumman focused on the F6F production, Eastern Air Lines took over the production of the F4F-4 variant which was called as the FM and its first production variant FM-1 was mostly the same as the F4F-4 except for decreased (from six to four) machine guns. The Wildcat was introduced to the Royal Navy and was known as the Martlet (fictitious bird often seen in the English coats of arms). This aircraft continued to see action as anti-submarine patrol and convoy escort until the end of war.   Warning! Not suitable for children under 14 years.

Article number: 300061120 Product: 1:48 US P-38 F:G Lightning Lighting Strikes! The P-38 Lightning was developed by Lockheed in response to a 1937 proposal from the United States Army Air Corps. Its twin V12 engines were housed one each in twin booms that stretched back to the tailplane, flanking a central nacelle containing the cockpit and weaponry. A combination of superb range, firepower and carrying capacity ensured that the P-38 was a superior fighter-bomber, and it made a considerable impact after joining fighting in Europe in 1942. It was also active in the Pacific War from late that year, its escapades including the shooting down of Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto in 1943 that provided a significant morale boost for the Allied cause. About the Model ★This is a 1/48 scale plastic model assembly kit.
